How is the required hourly rate calculated?
Required annual revenue = desired annual take-home pay / (1 - tax rate / 100) + annual business expenses. Billable hours = (52 x workdays per week - vacation days - other days off) x work hours per day x billable share / 100. Required hourly rate = annual revenue / billable hours.
Why include non-billable time?
Freelancers also spend time on sales, bookkeeping, learning and client communication. At 60% billable time, an eight-hour working day averages 4.8 hours of paid work. Charging for every working hour would underestimate the rate you need.
How are taxes and expenses treated?
The estimate applies your entered flat effective tax rate to profit after business expenses. It assumes all entered expenses reduce taxable profit. Actual tax treatment depends on your location and circumstances; use your own effective rate and adjust expenses for your situation. Sales taxes, progressive tax brackets and platform fees are not calculated separately.
Can I use this as a consultant rate calculator?
Yes. This estimates the hourly floor needed to meet your income target under a 52-week schedule. Specialization, project risk, market demand and client value may support a higher quote. Revenue assumes every planned billable hour is sold and paid; adjust billable time for gaps between projects.
Are my financial inputs saved?
Calculations run in your browser. This calculator does not send your inputs to a server.
Practical guide
What this tool helps you decide
This freelance rate calculator estimates the hourly rate needed to reach your annual take-home target after entered business expenses and an effective tax rate. It accounts for time off and non-billable work rather than assuming every working hour can be sold.
Use it to establish a cost-based hourly floor for consulting, design, development or other freelance services. It models a 52-week year and a flat effective tax rate; it does not calculate local tax brackets or choose a market rate for you.
How to use the freelancer hourly rate calculator
Choose an annual take-home target
Enter the personal income you want after modeled tax. Include any desired savings or retirement contributions in that target, and keep business expenses separate.
Add effective tax and annual expenses
Enter an estimated effective tax rate on profit after expenses, plus annual software, equipment, insurance and other business costs. Use assumptions appropriate to your situation rather than a marginal tax bracket alone.
Set the available working time
Enter workdays per week, hours per day, vacation days and other days off. Days off should be scheduled workdays rather than weekends you already excluded.
Estimate billable time and read the rate
Set the share of working time actually sold and paid. Leave room for proposals, bookkeeping, marketing, learning and project gaps. Review the required rate and test a lower billable percentage before quoting.
Worked example
A freelancer targeting $60,000 annual take-home pay, with a 25% effective tax rate and $12,000 annual expenses, needs $92,000 revenue. Working five eight-hour days per week, taking 20 vacation days and 10 other days off, and billing 60% of available time gives the example below.
- Required annual revenue
- $92,000.00
- Working days per year
- 230
- Billable hours per year
- 1,104
- Required hourly rate
- $83.34

How to interpret your results
The hourly result is rounded up to the next cent so the unrounded cost-based floor is covered. The rate is not a guaranteed market price. If the market will not support it, compare a lower expense base, different service package or more reliable billable utilization instead of assuming additional unpaid hours solve the gap.
Common input mistakes to avoid
- Keep all salary and expense figures annual, not monthly.
- Do not enter vacation weekends a second time as lost working days.
- Do not confuse an eight-hour workday with eight billable hours.
Questions before you use the results
Can consultants use this calculator?
Yes. Enter consulting income, expenses and realistic billable utilization. The calculation is the same; specialization, project risk and client value can justify pricing above the cost-based floor.
Can I turn the hourly result into a project price?
Use it as one input: multiply by realistic delivery hours, then account for project management, revisions, scope risk and the value of the outcome. The calculator itself does not estimate a project scope.
What if my income is seasonal?
Use an annual billable share that reflects quieter months and time between projects. Average monthly revenue is annual required revenue divided by 12, not a forecast that every month will earn the same amount.
