Optional VAT/GST or other tax on the service fee only. Income taxes and withholding are excluded.

Applied after withdrawal fees. Enter your estimated conversion spread, not an exchange rate.

Verified fee rules and calculation

Does Upwork still charge a flat 10%?

Standard new marketplace contracts moved to variable fees in May 2025. The current range is 0-15% per contract. Enter your displayed fee; special programs can have different arrangements. This calculator does not infer your fee from lifetime earnings or contract size.

Which withdrawal rules are included?

Direct to Local Bank costs $0.99 per withdrawal, excluding possible receiving fees. Direct to U.S. Bank is free with a U.S. tax address; a $2.99 fee applies with a non-U.S. tax address from September 1, 2026. Use custom costs for PayPal, Payoneer, wire or other methods.

How are payout and reverse pricing calculated?

Service fee = earnings x contract fee percentage. Optional fee tax applies to that fee. Subtract both and withdrawal costs, then apply your conversion percentage to the positive remaining balance. Required billing = (desired net / (1 - conversion percentage) + withdrawal costs) / (1 - contract fee percentage x (1 + fee tax percentage)). Percentages are divided by 100. Required billing rounds up to cents.

A negative payout means entered deductions exceed earnings. Actual transactions may round fees individually, and platform minimums, refunds, Connects, memberships, income taxes and withholding are outside this estimate. Not affiliated with Upwork.

Practical guide

What this tool helps you decide

This Upwork fee calculator turns gross contract earnings into an estimated USD-equivalent payout. It applies the contract-specific service fee, optional tax on that fee, withdrawal costs and an entered currency conversion cost in sequence.

Use it before pricing a proposal or withdrawing earnings. The default 10% service fee is an example; your proposal, offer or contract shows the percentage you should enter. Source links and fee verification dates are provided on this page.

How to use the Upwork net payout calculator

  1. Enter gross earnings and the displayed contract fee

Use the amount earned on one contract and the actual service fee shown by Upwork. Do not choose a fee from lifetime billing tiers or assume every contract uses the same percentage.

  2. Choose a withdrawal preset

Select Direct to Local Bank, eligible U.S.-address ACH, non-U.S.-address ACH or a custom method. Edit the total withdrawal amount to include receiving-bank fees or multiple withdrawals.

  3. Add fee tax and conversion costs if applicable

The optional fee tax applies only to the Upwork service fee. The conversion input is a percentage cost applied after withdrawal deductions, not a live exchange rate or a tax on your income.

  4. Review net pay and reverse pricing

Compare the estimated payout with your budget. Enter a desired net amount to see the gross billing needed under the same fee assumptions. Required billing rounds up to cents.

Worked example

Suppose a contract earns $1,000 and its displayed service fee is 15%. A single Direct to Local Bank withdrawal costs $0.99. This example assumes no tax on the service fee and no entered currency conversion cost.

How to interpret your results

Net payout is the amount remaining after the deductions you entered, expressed in USD equivalent. It is not after-income-tax pay. The reverse calculation answers a different question: what gross contract amount would leave your desired payout after these same deductions?

Common input mistakes to avoid

  • Check the fee for each contract instead of averaging unrelated contracts.
  • Include receiving fees and repeat withdrawals where they apply.
  • Keep income tax, withholding, Connects and memberships in a separate personal or business budget.

Questions before you use the results

Can I combine several Upwork contracts?

For a precise comparison, calculate each contract with its own displayed fee and then total the results. A single percentage applied to combined earnings can hide differences between contracts.

Is the conversion input a USD-to-local-currency rate?

No. It estimates a percentage deduction for conversion. The output remains in USD equivalent. Use the exchange rate offered by your payment provider separately to estimate local-currency receipts.

Why might my actual payout differ by a few cents?

Upwork and payment providers may round individual fees or transactions separately. This calculator uses the entered aggregate amounts and rounds the displayed result; receiving fees and unentered deductions can also change the final payout.
